Display strips

One of the things I'd like to see is small, very cheap "display strips", which would be simple, battery-operated, wireless displays that you could place around your work (or home) environment and treat as adjunct displays for your main PC desktop.

In other words, you might start some simple apps and drag each of them to a particular "display strip" where they would display information of value to that particular location.

For example, you might put one near your door which would display reminders relevant to when you are walking out the door. Or, have a couple out on your desk that always display specialized information regardless of what you happen to be working on at the time on your main display.

You might even place a few of these around the edge of your monitor, much like the ubiquitous PostIt stickers.

You might even have a "tree" of these displays, each mounted on a flexible branch so that you can arrange them in three dimensions to prioritize them.

I supposed you could also call these "PostIt Displays", but somebody has a trademark there.

Jack, this is brilliant!

On Mondays, it could remind me to take out the trash as I was leaving the house. Every other Thursday, it could remind me to put out the recyclables.

Currently, I do this with a Yahoo Reminder, which emails it to me, but a sign on the way out the door would be much better, especially if it could be linked automatically to something like a Yahoo reminder!

I could also send an email message to it on those days when I am supposed to bring something in to work that I am apt to forget.

After thinking about it, I realized the following "social problem"... your wife (or mother or annoying teenager) could get hold of the email address for one of your displays and they could post to it! I suppose that could be quite "useful" for them, but imagine it... "your" display is no longer simply "your" display. This could unlock many possibilities... unintended consequences, but a lot of potential applications that we may not even be able to imagine today.

Another possibility... for marketing... cheap displays could be pre-programmed to accept data from a designated source... so, a company could send you a display that shows useful info like the weather, stock prices, news, etc, plus their latest ads and sales pitches. You place it near your PC to get the useful info (kind of like people sending you a calendar that has their ad on it) and they get direct access to you for ads. The nice thing is that since you can position it, it wouldn't have all the annoyance of popup and fixed ads that are "stuck" on web pages.

This is an RSS Reader on a strip of tape. ;-)

On the flip side from RSS... use blog-like technology for feeding information out to people... to "your" display in their environment... rather than old-fashioned email.

In any case, one idea is that a display is "wired" to an RSS feed, rather than being a traditional "windows application" or even an email window.

Display strips... I've enjoyed reading your blog. I was searching for work from home sites. I have a home based business and I wanted some ideas and tips. I also have a blog, it is www.adminsupervisor.blogspot.com it’s new and it’s getting better all the time. Have a look if you want, but I'm moving house and have not posted in a while. I'll get back to it soon.

My other site is a work from home site. I recently decided to build my own income and I thought I searching for tips would help me become a better mentor.

Keep up the great work Base Technology, I'll be back soon.
